String or ribbon works just as well. Wrap it snug, mark where it meets, then hold it up to a ruler or a yardstick.

Length: on a 5'5" frame, size M hits roughly 5" above the floor. Add about an inch of clearance for every inch taller, lose one for every inch shorter.

Love the cut and the pockets
Tried the S and the XS. In the S the neckline felt too loose, like a bra strap might show, so she went with the XS for the way the neckline fit. The shoulders are a little snug, but it beat the loose neckline. Loved the flow and how comfortable it was. Photos show both sizes.
I usually have a hard time fitting my arms in dresses, but this feels really good
Usually a medium, so the S surprised her. Finding things that fit isn't always easy for her, and this one draped really nicely. She was delighted.
This is really comfy
The M gives her a fitted bust like she likes, especially with the belt, with a loose, comfy fit below. Shoulders are narrow and this neckline sits right on her.
Drapes nicely
Full bust, narrow shoulders. The L fit best across her bust; her arms and shoulders could have taken the M, but with her bust she sized up to the L. She likes a dress that's soft and flowy without a belt, and this is that.
Let me know if this comes in more everyday colors. I'd buy multiple.
Tried the L and the XL. The L was more fitted on her, and she ended up preferring the XL for the flow; she called it a perfect fit. Likes a fit-and-flare that shows off her top half and stays loose through the hips.
I feel so festive!
Narrow shoulders, small bust, and all her height is in her torso, but the neckline fits well with a lower-cut bra to keep it hidden. Her arms run petite and the forearms are big on her, but she prefers a flowy, comfy fit, so the XS is the one.
It's so comfy and it has pockets
Honest one: this wasn't the right dress for Kelly, and you can see it. She liked the flow of the dress, but with narrow shoulders the neckline sat too wide on her and the sleeves ran big. If you're very petite with narrow shoulders, the XS will probably feel like this on you too.
Feels great moving around
In bodycon dresses she's a medium, but because this one is flowier the XS fit her really well: neckline, arms, everything. Her shoulders and hips usually make dresses hard to fit, and this one just worked.
The material feels nice
Petite with a short torso, so the XS showed more cleavage than she usually goes for. The neckline sat a little wide on her shoulders but felt okay. She did wish the arms were a little tighter, but as she put it, things are always a little big on her because she's so petite.
The fabric is so soft
Very petite, and the XS was just too big on her, with a couple of extra inches through the forearm. She loved the fabric, but if your measurements are close to hers, this one isn't going to fit the way you want.
Wow, this is actually really comfy
Slim frame, wide shoulders, small bust. Usually a small, and the XS fit just right, with a little room through the forearm on her small wrists. She wore it with a strapless bra.
It has pockets!
Tried both. She liked the drape of the skirt in the S, but the neckline felt too wide and not as secure. The XS fit best overall, and the neckline and arms felt right. At 5'7" the length lands well.

Wow, this is actually really comfortable
Usually a size 8 or a medium, and sized down to the S. Narrow shoulders. At 5'10" the hem lands about 12 inches off the floor, so that's where the length falls on a taller frame.
This would be great to bring on a Christmas cruise
Broad shoulders and an hourglass figure. The S was just right through the bust and hips, with the shoulders and biceps a little snug. What sold her was how light it is and how small it packs, which is the travel dress she was looking for.
